Roderick Harper

Roderick Harper comes from very humble beginnings. He grew up as a child of the church. But, not just any church, one of the most radical churches in the land, the Church of God in Christ. One the hallmarks of this church is all of the music. Since 1996, he has been a part of all of the music and sound, along with all of the experiences which came along with it.

Biography

Roderick recalls hearing his pastor, Bishop A.T. Moore, during a Tuesday night service,  fussing about the microphone sound in the sanctuary. Typically, the sound was being managed by Sister Beverly Haskins, but she wasn’t in the service at that moment. So, he hopped on the soundboard and stayed there. He recalls sitting each week, between 2 musical geniuses; Brother McDaniel Bluitt, the trumpet player and Deacon Robert Haskins, the church organist. Moore Temple Church of God in Christ was a Reel to Reel Tascam Mixing Console which was pretty modern at the time.

The late Bishop A.T. Moore loved his sound system. He was often getting on Roderick about putting microphones on everything except the drums! Eventually, the church upgraded to a 32-channel Yamaha mixing console, which is the same one in the church in 2022. The challenge with having so many cords running to speakers and lots of mics is balancing out the sound and making sure that sounds aren’t clipped or stripped in the process of using them. It was truly a balancing act for Roderick. He didn’t always get everything right, but that’s where the learnings came in and he was able to grow his skill under the patience and constant feedback from his church leaders.

When he’s not working, Roderick enjoys time with his mom and his beautiful children. He also goes fishing, when the weather permits.
